November 26, 1948: Australian-American Biologist Elizabeth Blackburn was Born
Australian-American Biologist Elizabeth Helen Blackburn (November 26, 1948 – present) is Professor of Biology and Physiology, in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Collaborating with Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak, Blackburn discovered telomere and telomerase and how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase. For their work, Blackburn, Greider, and Szostak were jointly awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
