December 7, 1905: Scientists Proposed the Concept of Genetic Linkage

In 1905, the British geneticists William Bateson, Edith Rebecca Saunders and Reginald Punnett, cross-bred pea plants in experiments similar to Mendel’s. They were interested in trait inheritance in the sweet pea and were studying two genes—the gene for flower colour and the gene affecting the shape of pollen grains to decipher the phenomenom. Their experiment revealed linkage between different alleles. Later with clearer revelation of chromosome, scientists discovered that two genetic markers which are physically near to each other on a chromosome are likely to be inherited together, and explained the mechanism of genetic linkage.
