December 17, 2015: Whole Genome Sequence of Sugar Pine was Completed
The sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana), being praised as king of the conifers, is one of the tallest tree species in the world. Its whole genome was completely sequenced in 2015, and the result was important to forestry and environmental study. At 10 times the size of the human genome, the sugar pine genome is the largest ever sequenced for any organism. Sugar pine is also an important source of timber and wood pulp. Discovering the sugar pine genome would substantially impact on reforestation and conservation.
