December 28, 1944: Celebrate the Birthday of American Biochemist Kary Mullis

Kary Banks Mullis (December 28, 1944 – present) is a an American biochemist known for his reinvention of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique which allows rapid replication of trace amount of nucleic acid sequences. Mullis’s invention is siginificant to DNA identification, gene sequencing, gene transfer, and genetic testing. Mullis shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Michael Smith and earned the Japan Prize in the same year for his work. Today, PCR technology is one of the most important technology in biochemistry and molecular biology.
