March 16, 2005: NIH Announced Sequence of the Human X Chromosome Was Completed

On March 16, 2005, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced the completion of the first comprehensive analysis of the sequence of the human X chromosome. A series of studies supported by NIH revealed new insights into the evolution of sex chromosomes and the biological differences between males and females. The discovery includes a detailed analysis of the X chromosome’s DNA sequence and a survey of its gene activity, and was published in the journal Nature.
