April 5, 2002: The Sequence of the Rice Genome Was Completed
Scientists collectively worked on decoding the genome sequence of rice, one of the most important corps in the world. On April 5, 2002, research teams at the Beijing Genomics Institute and a private firm Syngenta respectively published their results of draft sequence of the rice genome on the Science journal. According to the genetic mapping results, rice has estimated 32,000-50,000 genes. The size of rice genome is equivalent to one-eighth of the human genome, but the genes it carries are more genes than humans have. Sequencing of the rice genome not only is significant to genomics research, but also is a crucial reference for food production in the future.
