April 18, 1905: The Term “Genetics” First Used by A Brithsh Biologist
Although the study of genetics has a long history since the Mendelian inheritance in the 19th century and even earlier, the term “genetic” was not appeared until 1905. A British biologist William Bateson coined the term “genetics” in his letter to a zoologist, Adam Sedgwick in 1905, and later officially used the word at the International Conference on Hybridisation and Plant Breeding in 1906 in London. Thus, the conference was renamed as the International Conference on Genetics: Hybridization.
