May 7, 1939: Canadian American Molecular Biologist Sidney Altman Was Born
Molecular biologist Sidney Altman (May 7, 1939 – present) discovered the catalytic properties of RNA indicating that RNA itself can act like an enzyme catalyzing chemical reactions without the need of proteins. In 1989, Altman shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas R. Cech for this discovery.
