May 22, 1989: NCI’s First Attempt to Genetically Engineer and Modify the Ability of Human Lymphocyte
On May 22, 1989, Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg, a scientist at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), performed the first human gene transfer trial in the history. Dr. Rosenberg implanted the human tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes with a foreign bacterial gene added to human body, and attempted to use genetic engineering to enhance the tracking and cytophagic abilities of lymphocytes.
