At the MEDICA Medical Technology Trade Fair (MEDICA 2023) in Düsseldorf, Germany, which boasts over 40 years of history, Amagcare Inc. (Amagcare) made a notable appearance. On November 16th, the exhibition concluded successfully, with Amagcare, led by Chairman Lin Qiu-Feng, showcasing its latest magnesium alloy products at the Taiwan pavilion. This event is one of the largest and most indicative medical technology trade fair globally.

“Absorbable implants” represent a significant breakthrough in modern surgical materials, sparing patients the need for a second surgery to remove implants, as these are naturally absorbed and decomposed by the human body. The manufacturing materials mainly include biocompatible and biodegradable polymers such as Polylactic acid (PLA), Polycaprolactone (PCL), and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). These implants are widely used in surgical sutures for stitching wounds or internal tissues and are absorbed by the body over time. In orthopedics, absorbable screws and staples are used for fixing fractures or promoting bone synthesis. Additionally, these implants find applications in drug delivery systems, such as for the localized release of chemotherapy drugs. Their main advantage lies in reducing the need and risk of secondary surgeries and mitigating patient discomfort and complications from long-term foreign object placement.

Advancements in Skin Staples and Surgical Clips

Amagcare has announced that its magnesium alloy medical devices, primarily used in orthopedics and cardiovascular stents, are now being developed for new applications, such as “Skin Staples” and “Surgical Clips.” These innovative products, which degrade and get absorbed while treating wounds, reduce the pain and psychological pressure of removing staples after wound recovery.

After the degradation of the magnesium (Mg) staples, their mechanical properties gradually weaken. This characteristic reduces the force required to remove the staple post wound healing, lessening patient discomfort. The surgical clips, made of magnesium alloy, are metallically stable and similar to titanium clip systems. They are completely absorbed in the body within about 180 days and do not affect subsequent radiological examinations.

Chairman Lin stated that Amagcare’s degradable magnesium alloy products have expanded from orthopedic implants to veterinary applications. Although complete information on veterinary applications has not yet been released, the growing animal (especially pet) medical market suggests promising future prospects for veterinary applications.
