December 18, 1992: American Bacterial Geneticist Esther Lederberg was Born
Esther Miriam Zimmer Lederberg (December 18, 1922 – November 11, 2006) was an American microbiologist and a pioneer of bacterial genetics. Lederberg was the first scientist who discovered bacterial virus λ and studied the transfer of genes between bacteria by specialized transduction. She married Joshua Lederberg who won the 1958 Nobel prize for physiology or medicine in 1946, but divorced in 1996.
